Obituary for Gordon Helm

Helm, Gordon A. 1935-2022 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon at Lancaster Long Term Care on Wednesday April 27th, 2022, at the age of 87. Beloved husband of Isobel (nee Hammond) Helm, loving father of Katherine (Mary), Gordon (Judith), Murray (Nancy) and Marilyn Bailey. Dear brother of Dorothy Prime. Cherished grandfather of Sierra, Taralin, Mathew, Abby and Hannah, and great-grandfather of Jackson, MacKenzie and Logan.

Gordon served his family, country, and community his entire life. Earning his Engineering degree from McGill through an ROTC scholarship, he joined the RCAF and flew F-86 Sabres. He left the RCAF and joined Air Canada in Montreal, which led to a professional lifetime of drafting critical flight safety data and instructions for pilots and commercial aviation. Gordon also cared deeply about his family. He devoted his spare time to Scouts Canada, PTA, as a Swimming official, camping, and boating. There were lots of family camping adventures and road trips with the folding tent trailer. Gordon was also into science, and he built one of the most energy efficiency homes in the 80s capturing heat from every thermal source available and storing it in water containers and using one of the first-generation heat pumps to keep the house warm for Isobel. He was a true Quebecer loving Maple Syrup and even managed to tap the trees on his property, turning the sap into syrup in Isobel’s kitchen. We all enjoyed his syrup and he even poured it out in the snow for sticky maple syrup taffy for grandchildren. Gordon touched a lot of lives and lived a life full of both service and adventure, being an avid traveller with lifelong friends and his sister. He will be remembered through his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum:
Resting at the Wilson Funeral Home, 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall Saturday May 28, 2022 from 12noon until time of Funeral in the Chapel at 2:00PM. For those wishing to view the service live stream on line go to:
